The Vertical Speed Indicator is used to inform the pilot if the aircraft is maintaining level flight, especially when flying on instruments in foul weather or at night. Many times in these situations the pilot can be led to think that the aircraft is in level flight when in actual fact it is diving or climbing.
This design shows an aircraft in a slight climb.
