The MiG-25, also known as "Foxbat," is a supersonic reconnaissance and interceptor aircraft. With an operational speed of Mach 2.83, the prototype flew in 1964 and went into service in 1970. If necessary, Mach 3.2 could damage the engines. The United States expressed concern about the MiG-25 and called for improvements in the performance of the F-15 Eagle that was being developed. The massive wings of the MiG-25 created the appearance that the stainless steel used to make the MiG-25 was substantially heavier.
The more advanced MiG-25PDS (DS for field upgrade) replaced about 379 MiG-25P. This variant was dubbed Foxbat-E by NATO. As part of the 19th Defense Division, which subsequently evolved into the 49th Air Defense Corp, a division of the 8th Air Defense Army, the Soviet 146 Guards Fighter Regiment (Gv IAP) was stationed in Ukraine in 1950. The units, along with their MiG-25P and MiG-25PDS, were seized by Ukraine in 1992 and disbanded in 1993 following the fall of the Soviet Union.
