F4 PHANTOM XT907 CUFFLINKS

As a company, it is our priority to provide customers with truly unique and bespoke cufflinks that capture a small piece of aviation history. The F4 Phantom have been cast using material reclaimed from the Phantom XT907 - the U.S. Navy’s fattest, highest flying and longest range fighter.

The materials for the F4 Phantom cufflinks involved liaising closely with various government agencies, private companies and preservation groups to secure access to suitable materials that could be authenticated with a clear audit trail to the original subject being commemorated. This verification process ensures that these materials are genuine pieces of the iconic vehicle.

Once the material has been secured, we move onto the design process, which involves a combination of 3D scanning and accomplished CAD design staff, intertwining quality craftsmanship with the most innovative technology for a highly detailed and correctly proportioned finished renderings. The renderings are then 3D printed in high resolution to create an initial wax which can be cast as the master design. This meticulous and time-consuming process can prove a challenge - particularly for the Phantom XT907, as the master jeweller has to ensure the wingspan is correctly proportioned and authentically mirrors the original design.

Once the design process has been completed, we work in close proximity to the finest craftsmen in the British jeweller industry. The jewellers are experts in the use of reclaimed material with provenance and have rigorous processes in place to ensure our material is isolated all the way through production. This process ensures the provenance and integrity of the metal is maintained throughout the casting process.

HISTORY OF F4 PHANTOM

Introducing the MCDonnell two-place, twinjet, all weather F-4 Phantom, the U.S. Navy’s fastest, highest flying and longest range fighter. Since first gracing the skies in 1958, the F-4 saw combat in both the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm in addition to serving with the air forces of 11 countries.

The F4 Phantoms J79 engine is what really set it apart. Matching the velocity with a titan rocket for 90 extreme seconds, the Phantom’s pace and prowess in the skies was exhilarating. Indeed, for nearly four decades of service in the U.S. military, the Phantom performed every combat task thrown at it—almost every mission ever defined. With a top speed of over Mach 2.2, this large fighter aircraft could carry more than 18,000 pounds of weapons on nine external hard points - including air-to-air missiles, air-to-ground missiles and various bombs. The Phantoms design itself, beginning in 1959, allowed it to set 15 world records for in-flight performance, including an absolute speed record and an absolute altitude record.

For this exact reason, the F4 Phantom was used extensively in the Vietnam War, playing a pivotal role as the principale air superiority fighter for the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps as well as becoming an important aircraft in many ground-attack and aerial reconnaissance roles within that war. The Phantom's important role extended beyond the 60s, as it continued to form a major part of U.S military air power throughout the 1970s and 1980s, until it was gradually replaced by the modern F-15 Eagle and F-16 Falcon.

The F4 Phantom was truly an iconic flight that was the only aircraft to be used by both the U.S flight demonstration teams: the United States Air Force Thunder birds and the United States Navy Blue Angels.
